A sleeper is basically a car with a relatively unassuming exterior, but packing a punch comparable to that of a proper sports car.
The term sleeper car is derived from the fact that it looks “asleep,” with few or no hints that it’s an actual performance car, and also that people “sleep on them” and aren’t aware of what’s hiding under the hood.
The sleeper car was born when American sedans were fitted with huge and powerful V8 engines, but these days, carmakers from all corners of the world have churned out innocent-looking high-performance models.
2012 Chrysler 300 SRT

The Chrysler 300 SRT is a luxurious American sleeper car, so there are no prizes for guessing that there’s a muscular V8 under the hood. The 6.4-liter unit produces 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
With power like that, even a heavy car like the Chrysler 300 can put down some impressive acceleration times. Zero to 60 mph is done in the low 4-second range, and it has a 175 mph top speed.
2024 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe

True BMW connoisseurs may want an Alpina model over an M version. For those who don’t know, Alpina specializes in turning Bimmers into something truly remarkable, but with more understated looks than your average M car.
The BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe has plenty of unique components throughout, but the real jewel is the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that now produces 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. With a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 201 mph, it’s fair to say Alpina knows a thing or two about building ludicrously fast cars.
2023 Audi S8

Officially, the Audi S8 reaches 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, but Car & Driver managed it in 3.2 seconds on their test track. Either way, that’s unbelievably fast for a large, comfortable executive sedan.
To the untrained eye, it looks fancy but unassuming. However, once the driver, or chauffeur, if you will, floors the throttle, all the 563 horses spring to life, and people will soon realize that the S8 packs a serious punch.
2023 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon

The Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon is a proper supercar cosplaying as a practical family car. Under the hood, we find a glorious 603-hp twin-turbo V8 engine. All those horses are sent to the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, resulting in a rocket-like 3.0-second sprint from 0 to 60 mph.
Its top speed is limited to 180 mph, and realistically, nobody needs to go that fast on public roads. Most people would never think it packs such a serious punch, and you can laugh maniacally as they choke on your dust and shrink into a tiny dot in the rearview mirror.
2024 Volkswagen Golf R

If you don’t need a large station wagon, perhaps the latest Golf R will do the trick. It may look inconspicuous, but it’s actually faster to 60 mph than a Ferrari F430. There are even plenty of performance parts available to make it even faster.
Under the hood, the Golf R has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It doesn’t sound like much, but thanks to its AWD setup, it has tons of grip and can utilize every ounce of power to its full effect, sprinting to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.
2008 Lexus IS F

The Lexus IS F doesn’t look much different from the regular IS sedan. Granted, it has different rims, and the stacked exhaust is unique for this model, but otherwise, nothing really stands out.
Performance-wise, it’s a whole different animal, though. Its angry 5.0-liter V8 engine produces 427 hp and 371 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Sixty mph arrives in just 4.2 seconds, and the IS F’s top speed is electronically limited to 170 mph.
2016 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport

The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport certainly isn’t the best-known Japanese performance car, nor does it look as aggressive as many other models in its segment. That’s good, though, because that’s what makes it a sleeper.
The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine generating 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to all four wheels via the 7-speed automatic transmission. Its top speed is limited to 150 mph, but with the limiter disabled, it can crack the 180 mph barrier.
2013 Ford Taurus SHO

Exterior-wise, there aren’t many clues hinting to what the Taurus SHO really is. It may appear to be just another comfortable sedan, but this is a real sports car slayer thanks to its twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.
With 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, the Ford Taurus SHO sprints to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, has a top speed of 162 mph, and runs the quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds.
2015 Chevrolet SS

The Chevrolet SS is actually based on an Australian car — the Holden Commodore. It looks good, but there’s nothing about its looks that really excites gearhead. That changes as soon as you pop the hood and the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 from a Corvette shows up to the party.
The Chevrolet SS has 415 hp and 415 lb-ft, which is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed transmission. It’ll launch from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, the top speed is limited to 160 mph, and it finishes the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds.
2014 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon

As Cadillac was moving away from soft and wallowy land yachts, the CTS was created to compete with German luxury cars, famous for their high-performance and focused driving experience.
The CTS-V was available in coupe, sedan, and wagon form, and the last one is the best sleeper of the bunch. Under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 556 hp and 551 lb-ft of torque, enough to send it from 0 to 60 in four seconds flat. Top speed was a whopping 185 mph, ensuring it could more than keep up with ze Germans.
2011 Audi S6 V10

Thanks to its V10 engine, the C6-generation of Audi’s S6 is pure automotive ridiculousness. Contrary to popular belief, it’s actually not the same V10 as the one used in the Lamborghini Gallardo. This 5.2-liter was developed by Audi, and is derived from the 4.8-liter V8.
The S6’s screaming V10 produced 430 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, and not a single horse was lost to wheel spin thanks to the Quattro AWD system. Zero to 60 mph takes a mere 5.1 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 155 mph.
2008 Volvo S80 V8

Volvo launched its second-gen S80 in 2006, and its design certainly reflected Scandinavian reservedness. Under the hood, though, it’s a very different story. The S80 V8 is filled with Viking rage thanks to an angry 4.4-liter V8 engine pumping out 311 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque.
Combined with an AWD system, that power means the Volvo will reach 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and continue until the needle points at 155 mph. It’s not without reason that this engine has since been used in the Noble M600 supercar.
2017 Jaguar XJ Supercharged

The Jaguar XJ Supercharged was the vehicle of choice for British politicians, as it offered the perfect blend of stealth and performance. As its name suggests, the 5.0-liter V8 engine is indeed supercharged, producing 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque.
All that power was sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Its 4.2-second 0 to 60 mph sprint may sound impressive, but the 186-mph top speed is even more spectacular.
